This legacy paper provides a menu of options for local authorities in the UK, from which they can select in order to use the magic dust of the Games to enhance sport in their communities. It is not intended to be a comprehensive list of potential actions for local government, as such a list would be endless. However, it does present some key actions that, if taken forward by local authorities, would go a long way in helping the UK to achieve the sports legacy from the London 2012 Games. In effect, the ‘Legacy Objectives’ in this paper provide an attempt to define what could be seen as the components of ‘sports legacy’. Where it suggests ‘The Local Government Role (The Agenda for Action)’, we recognise that the methods chosen by each local authority will be different and may range from direct provision, to commissioning, to simply enabling and ensuring provision.
This Sports Legacy Agenda for Local Government is the delivery-focussed element of the Local Government Association’s sports legacy plan, which also builds on the leadership role of elected Members and the community leadership role of local authorities in the wider public sector. The key test of legacy from the London 2012 Games will be the extent to which these key actions will become embedded in local government for the long term.
